Rachel took a trip to Bexhill-on-Sea on May Bank Holiday to combine a visit to her grandparents as well as visit the Cerith Wyn Evans exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion.

Evans found the De La Warr Pavilion’s geographical setting as an important icon of Modernism and in reaction to this he selected works for the exhibition to relate to the horizon and distant landmark of Beachy Head. Evans described it as a “love letter to the building”, placed on each of the buildings 4 levels. The work avoids any direct communication of meaning with the audience and allows them to find their own understanding of the exhibition.

It was also a chance to visit the landscaping along the promenade, by HTA landscape design and an opportunity to see our signage and wayfinding.

We’ve been working with HTA Architects on this new build residential site in Enfield, helping create some bespoke signage for usage across the public realm and within the residential units themselves.

Working on a bespoke colour palette, we introduced different identifying shades to aid navigation through the development and implemented them to a pedestrian access route gateway marker, which reflects the former dairy on the site.

GD/ were lucky enough to attend the first day of the inaugural Design Festival in Cheltenham (April 20-22). In a day when events were stacked back to back, we managed to get to see some really great talks, all about differing design theories. Really concentrating on design thinking and how that influences design process, all three talks from the day had relevance to our work and how we try and think about design.

First up was Simon Kavanagh of the Kaos Pilots, talking about big ideas and changing the world through creative, clever design thinking and teaching. The second talk was entitled Stitching Structures, featuring Peter Clegg of Feilden Clegg Bradley, Stephen Hodder of Hodder & Partners, and Matthew Wells of Techniker, all discussing collaboration and how they each work with Architects, Engineers and Environmental consultants to better projects.

Took a quick break to check out the mini-exhibition in the Parabola Arts Centre showcasing the history and brand progress of SuperDry, which originates in Cheltenham.

The third talk of the day was amazingly inspiring. Simon Waterfall is an extremely experienced design consultant and creative thinker and his talk covered everything from how Coca Cola will save the world, through to the future of telecomms. In an amazing hour, he covered an extraordinary amount of content leaving the audience absolutely gripped by his every word. He finished the talk with this stunning tilt shift film. Already looking forward to next year.

At the end of 2011, we were invited to put the bid proposal for the Dean Gardens regeneration project in London Borough of Ealing.

Working with a team comprised of Notting Hill Housing Group, Hill Partnership and architects PCKO, we put together a perfect bound book sequentially answering prescriptive questions. We created a light-hearted sub-narrative of quotes to enrich the design submission. The quotes were taken directly from the core design principles, including illustrating themes such as connecting neighbourhoods, green amenity space, sustainability, inclusivity and regenerated places.
