Bexhill-on-Sea signage and wayfinding
We secured the wayfinding commission for this seafront and Promenade location at Bexhill on Sea, following a competitive pitch to the client – Rother District Council. The site includes the high profile and stunning De La Warr Pavilion site, creating a highly sensitive and heritage based scope for the project.
The project included site analysis, decluttering, design development and options appraisals through to final design. The concept for orientation was to ensure that key views both inland and out to sea would be uninterrupted by bulky signage. Because of the seafront location, we had to consider materials carefully, for durability and longevity and therefore utilised a hard wearing component system, insuring the signage for 15 years.
Our proposals included; Entrance markers at key access points, Monoliths running along the seafront, designed as double sided with a slatted directionally system and lift out vitreous enamel mapping system and a series of bespoke isotypes created to assist with navigation used across all outputs.
The project was tendered in 2010 and the first phase of monoliths installed in early 2011 in line with the wider landscaping improvements. The final phase of regeneration around the Colonnade and works to the De La Warr Pavillion landscape will be completed at the end of 2011, including the final signage elements.
